Painting.

I get a lot of people asking me what inks I use for my paintings, and what paper and brushes and pens etc. if you have been tattooed by me, talked to me at a convention or I recognise your username as somebody who regularly likes my work, I’m happy to share what I use. I will however say that even though I think I do alright at painting, I am really bad at helping anybody else out.

I line with sharpies and get frustrated because I have to buy a new one every time I draw something because they go blunt so fast and half the time I am just lightly stroking the paper with them. So me recommending sharpies is sort of pointless. If anything, I need you to recommend me something that works better that isn’t some sort of fine line pen/nib and ink coz I hate both of those.

When it comes to my actual paints, I have a preferred brand but I know people who swear by others. Same goes for paper. Choosing the right paper is about picking something with the strength and absorbency to fit your technique and style of painting.

And my painting technique? Yeah I have a complicated system of two brushes, a pot of water and 2 sheets of plenty folded in half (it has to be plenty, any other brand of kitchen roll throws off the delicate balance of absorbency) and I’ll dip my blending brush into the water then make it touch the kitchen roll enough to take off the excess but leave enough on the brush. There is literally no way that I can explain that, or even show you if you were sat 2 inches from me, it’s just how I figured it out to work for me.

I hate to come across as arrogant for not sharing all of my techniques and items that I use that I spent literally years refining and hundreds upon hundreds of pounds buying shit stuff until I found the right stuff for me, but I feel like everybody needs to go through that.

Just because a brand of paper works for me, it doesn’t mean it will work for you. Go to your local art store and buy what you can afford to get, use it a lot then buy new stuff when you can afford to again and compare them.

But like I said, if you show an interest in me and my work or contribute to my earnings I will help you with what I can, but random asks out do the blue will result in nothing.
